BLOKARTS: Despite breaking an axle during the 100km marathon at the 2013 Australian Blokart Open at Yeppoon, CQ Blokart Club president and competitor Darren Bianchi dominated the race to take out the overall national endurance title for the third year running.

"Last year I blew a tyre and this year I broke an axle while racing. Luckily I had a spare on board and I fixed it on sight, and still won...it was very stressful," Yeppoon's Bianchi said.

In the marathon, competitors were seated in the blokarts for around two and a half hours, and raced on a 10km lap course, which headed north of the Mercure Resort, and back towards Yeppoon.

"It's a hard run, and it definitely takes its toll," Bianchi said.

A total of 68 competitors from across the country and from New Zealand, took part in the three days of racing.

At 74, local pharmacist Cliff Daley was the oldest competitor, while Jerome Henwood was the youngest at nine years old, and both were trying the sport for the first time.

Kiwi Paul Beckett aka Mr Blokart, the designer of the blokart, was also in action, nabbing a second place in the short-course super-heavyweight performance division.

The short-course racing kicked off the regatta on Saturday and Sunday when each class had to complete 11 rounds on a rough beach, pitted by the rough ocean conditions and strong winds, Bianchi explained.

Host club Central Queensland was the biggest in Australia and covered a large expanse, so it was no surprise when CQ competitors featured a great deal in the short-course results.

Mackay's John Ray scored a coup when he defeated Kiwi John Nicolson, who had performed extremely well at last year's World Championships in the US, to claim the heavyweight performance class.

It was an all-local affair in the super-heavyweight production class, with Yeppoon's Daryl Skinner taking out first place, ahead of Nev Michell and Russell George.

Competitors would now turn their focus to preparing for next year's World Blokart Championships, at Lake Walyungup where an estimated 90-strong contingent would represent Australia.

RESULTS

100km Marathon: Overall winner Darren Bianchi (Yeppoon)

Short Course Performance winners: Heavyweight 1 John Ray (Mackay); Middleweight Hayden Ingall (Far North Qld); Lightweight Blake Smith-Jung (Mky); Super-Heavyweight Gavin Statham (Mky).

Short Course Production winners: Super-Heavyweight Daryl Skinner; Heavyweight Colin Skinner (Yeppoon); Middleweight Brendan Dempster (Mky); Lightweight Brin Wooding (Airlie Beach).

Haydn Ingall,

Kiwis blow away Aussies

HOWICK sailors navigated high winds and rough course conditions to podium places at the Australian blokart national champs.

Tony Frischer, owner of Eastern Cover Centre in Howick, and former Howickian Haydn Ingall, were among the nearly 70 competitors that took part in the event on Queensland’s central coast earlier this month, which included an 11-race short course series and a 100-kilometre marathon race.

Winds were between 15 and 22 knots for the two days of racing that made sail and mast selection the key to a good finish.

“As the winds stayed up throughout the night, it made the beach surface very corrugated as the tide went out,” says Frischer.

“The way you approached the turning marks was vital as too much speed caused competitors to spin out and lose vital places.”

Ingall and Frischer were both vying for the performance middleweight title, which Ingall claimed comprehensively. He won the first seven races and was second in his remaining counting results in a dominant display.

Frischer had six podium finishes on his way to third place in the class.

In the endurance race, Ingall was first in the class and third overall.

“Speeds of close to 70kph were obtained on the long runs back up the beach and the race took nearly 2.5 hours to complete,” says Frischer, who placed fourth.

Thank you to Darren Bianchi and Central QLD Blokart Club for organizing the 2013 Australian BloKart Open, held at Yeppoon, QLD, and for allowing me to come and film the event. It was an awesome experience and one that I would love to try out myself sometime.

The song was originally composed by David Bruggemann. David is such a professional composer. Every time I work with him, he takes my videos to the next level, providing a greater experience for those who watch them.
Check out his facebook page:

Also, check out his website:

I also created the sound design from scratch because it was so windy on the day that I just ended up with horrible audio. It ended up being so fun to create these sounds, using anything and everything I could find in my house and mashing the sounds together to create the best sounds to match the visuals.

This was shot on a Canon 5D Mark III, with a Canon 16-35mm F/2.8 L series lens. I also borrowed footage from a few GoPro's that were used throughout the races. They definitely gave me a larger option when it came to the shots I used in the final edit so I appreciate the guys letting me use the footage.

And the smooth shots were done using a Glidecam HD 4000. Check them out at the link below. There are a lot of steadycam brands out there but the reputation of the Glidecam far exceeds any other model I have found, and it's easy to see why people keep on using them.

En mi opinión, es un campo de regatas muy divertido pero limitado;
hay mucha mezcla de categorías y es una lotería el no engancharse o colisionar con otros participantes
( como se ve en varias ocasiones ).
El recorrido es estrecho y alguien con un buen retrovisor y destreza puede evitar que se le adelante.

The right stuff at 10 years old
La historia de April y por que Xisqueta y Tere debían correr en Ivanpah

"For many of us old pro’s, entering a major blokart event is a relatively mundane activity. We easily forget how daunting it can be for a newcomer. The prospect of mixing it with hard-core competitors, especially during the chaos that is the average dial-up can be a frightening prospect for those new to the sport.

At the recent 2013 Australian National Championships, I met Ian Cormac, his partner Rachael Hill, and Rachael’s daughter April. While Ian has a sailing history that dates back many years and Rachael is a newcomer to blokarting, I’d like to tell you about young April, also a newcomer to the sport.

April was 10 years old at the time of the Nationals. She had only sailed occasionally in the lead up to the event, but that did not stop her entering in the Lightweight Production class. Like her mother, this was her first taste of competing in a major event. She was still learning, but that didn’t stop her giving it all she had. The wind was enough to put the Super Heavyweights on a 3m sail, but April just kept going. She even tackled the 100km Marathon, a race that was knocking off even seasoned professionals, forcing them to retire. This was one tough young lady.

What was inspiring was her tenacity and willingness to learn. After her races, we would give her a few pointers on what to do that she would then try in the following races. Even during the series, she improved. The most memorable race was one where she was coming last and was approaching the finish line. Ian noticed that the wind had shifted and what would normally have been a tacking duel to the finish line could be sailed in a direct line. He yelled to April to go straight to the line. She leaned over the windward wheel to put as much weight on it that her light frame would allow, turned towards the finish line, and hauled in the sail. She took off like a rocket, passing two or three karts in the short distance to the line. The look on her face after not coming last was priceless.

I am told that since the Nationals, April’s skills have continued to improve. If what I saw at the event and what has happened since is any guide, April Hill is a name you could be hearing in the years to come.

April clearly understood one important lesson – you don’t learn how to race sitting at home. You learn by getting involved and observing those around you. So if you are reading this thinking that you are too new to the sport to enter the Worlds, take a lesson from a gutsy 10 year old girl named April Hill."
