European Blokart Open and British Championships

If you have any feel for the wind in your face and silent speed you’ll need to get to The Windzone, Uphill Beach, Weston Super Mare  from September 19th to 22nd 2013.  You’ll see Blokarts racing around the beach !  And before you say “What ?!”, we let Chris Moore, the local organiser and event race officer, explain:

 “A Blokart is a 3-wheeled small land based sailing craft that packs into a bag you can carry or wheel and still does over 60mph with a high degree of safety.  The BLSA is hosting the European Blokart Open and British Championships on Uphill Beach this September, so the cream of the racers will be there. Racers are not just coming from Europe they are coming from all over the world, entrants from as far afield as New Zealand, Australia, USA as well as all over Europe, including a massive UK contingent. The Sports inventor Paul Beckett is also taking part, coming all the way from New Zealand, and we are expecting around 100 racers. Racing will be close and could be very fast.

60mph given the beach and the wind, and no fuel burned, what’s not to like ?

A spokesman from sponsor ICS Total Communications said “I tried it, I liked it, I bought a Blokart.  I’m sailing around the country with a growing band of pals and I want to support this healthy eco-friendly sport.  It helps me relax and keep sane in tricky times!”

It’s even spicy enough – almost everyone tips over at some stage but you are held in by a safety belt – that you won’t lose the fun side.  Light controls make a reality of safe wheel banging racing at 30-40mph.  With steel bars for protection children and adults alike can have fun and sail on an equal footing.

Oh, and it is an equalizer: there is one competitor with a wooden leg, and we will have some wheelchair users taking part as Well, BLSA Secretary Chris Selway is a wheelchair user and is ranked 3rd in the world in his class.

You won’t need to get in touch with sponsor Regs 4 Ships to spectate, but these craft do travel fast so exercise sense and follow the on course safety notices and marshals.  Thursday the 19th is a practice and press day from about 11:00 till 4pm, so you can get in and chat to the sailors.  It’s the easiest form of sailing to learn, so you can maybe even have a quick try under the auspices of one of the instructors of the national governing body the BLSA.

The serious racing will be on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from about 11am .  With prizes awarded by about 17:30 Sunday.  It’s a compact event where you can get real close to the action.

We have had a great response from North Somerset Council and local business’s helping us out with Sponsorship – Dragon Auto Services, Winterstoke Decorators Supply Ltd, Hayers, Cam Decs, Williams Self Drive Hire, RM Signs, Brandon Hire, and the event is being organised by Chris Moore of Weston Windsport. Land-sailors will hit the beach for national battle

From September 19-22, part of the town’s beach will become home to dozens of 60mph Blokarts – or land-sailors, to the layman.

The daredevil sport sees competitors race along the sands in small, three-wheeled craft, propelled by the wind using tall sails.

Sections of sand at the Uphill end of the beach will be transformed into ‘the wind zone’ as around 100 racers from around the world bid for glory.

Weston-based event organizer Chris Moore said: “A Blokart is a three-wheeled small land-based sailing craft that packs into a bag you can carry or wheel around and still does over 60mph with a high degree of safety.

“The British Land Speedsail Association is hosting the European Blokart Open and British Championships on Uphill Beach this September, so the cream of the racers will be there.

“Racers are not just coming from Europe they are coming from all over the world, entrants from as far afield as New Zealand, Australia, and the United States, as well as all over Europe, including a massive UK contingent.

“The sport’s inventor, Paul Beckett, is also taking part, coming all the way from New Zealand.

“We are expecting around 100 racers; racing will be close and could be very fast.”

Spectators will be able to get close to the action, and there is no charge so big crowds are expected.

A smaller-scale race weekend will be held on July 20 and 21, ahead of the main event in September, when Thursday’s practice day will be followed by intense racing from 11am each day.

"Following the EBA reps meeting, we have decided to run all weight categories included Flyweight at the Europeans. Even if you are the only one in the category we will still run it, but you will be racing in with the lightweights, but scored as a Flyweight.

On another point, if you are wanting to check your kart for scrutineering purposes and you think you might have something that isnt allowed let us know before the event and we will have a look at it. This comes after the EBA meeting as well, where i was shown a slight mod to the production downhaul hook that some of the Spanish are using. They have a small piece of rope that stops the hook from coming unhooked while sailing, this will be allowed to stay on the kart as in our view its a safety mod and certainly not a performance modification."
